Liverpool looked likely to lose one of their first-team stars. The proposed deal for the player is now off, however.

Liverpool aren't sure what to do with Harvey Elliott. The playmaker has always struggled for game time with the Reds, though very rarely because he's not good enough.

Injuries haven't helped, nor has the team's overall form. Then there's simply the wide number of players who play in his position.

It's all led to this summer, where Elliott looks likely to move on from Liverpool. Arne Slot started him just twice in the Premier League this season and his total minutes combine for the equivalent of about four matches.

Those aren't the numbers of a player with a bright future at the club. As sorry as that is.

There's also another incoming problem: Florian Wirtz. The German plays a very similar position to Elliott and will further reduce the Englishman's game time.

Harvey Elliott deal off

The most routine deal for Elliott appeared to be Bayer Leverkusen. There had been discussions about including a deal for him in the Wirtz talks, or at least negotiating a parallel deal.

Sky Germany says the discussions around Elliot have now stopped, though. He won't be heading to Leverkusen this summer.

It doesn't rule out a move elsewhere, however, and we imagine there's plenty of Premier League interest. It all depends on the fee Liverpool would want.

And that's an interesting one. There is absolutely no question that Elliott is a fantastic player - there's genuine magic in him.

But at the same time, Liverpool literally won't have squad space for him next season. He almost certainly has to depart, even if it's just on loan.

The fact buying clubs know Liverpool's position makes it difficult to request £40m or £50m. Those are probably the rough figures Elliott is worth, though.

In truth, he's probably worth far more - but without the minutes to prove that, Liverpool won't get his full value.

So for now, all we know is that Elliott won't be heading to Leverkusen and that talks are off. Now we'll see what the future holds.
